The Bulgarian is preparing a trap for the euro. Why

The share of Bulgarians who express concerns about the introduction of the single European currency has been growing in the last year. This is shown by data from a study presented today by the European Commission.

The share of people in our country who are against the introduction of the euro is growing by 10 percent (up to 54 percent). The number of those who said they expect the euro in Bulgaria to have negative consequences increased by 12 percent (60 percent, an increase of 12 percent).

Asked whether they think Bulgaria is ready for the euro, 71 percent say no (annual growth of 4 percent). When asked when they want Bulgaria to introduce the common currency, the majority answered “After a while” (33 percent). According to 27 percent, this should not happen “never”, 19 percent answer “As late as possible”, and 18 percent – “As soon as possible”, Fakti.bg reported.

A total of 80 percent of Bulgarians say they would personally cope with the introduction of the euro in our country. According to 52 percent, the common currency will take away Bulgaria’s control over economic policy, and according to 60 percent – will take away part of the national identity.

The survey was conducted in late April and covers Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden – the EU countries that are about to adopt the euro. The data show broad support for the euro – an average of 60 percent of participants say they are in favor of the introduction of the single currency, according to the EC. Opinions are most favorable in Romania (77 per cent in support) and Hungary (69 per cent), and data from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Sweden are the most unfavorable.
