Rune Aasen and his entourage sat on the hotel balcony when the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 went on the other side of the island.
For the second time in one month, the popular holiday island of Crete in Greece was hit by a powerful earthquake on Tuesday.
This time the quake, which was recorded around 12.30 local time, was measured at 6.3.
Rune Aasen is on a long-term holiday on the island with his girlfriend and their two children. He says they were sitting on the balcony of the hotel room in the town of Rethymnon when the quake struck off the east side of the island.
– We felt that the building began to sway quite violently, and it shook well in the glasses on the table in front of us. We also saw that the jet ski providers started pulling all the scooters ashore. Then we understood that it was an earthquake, he says.
According to the European Seismology Center, the quake was two kilometers deep, and went about 140 km east of Rethymnon, where Aasen lives.
– Disgusting
Early Tuesday afternoon, no injuries have been reported so far, but photos published on Twitter show, among other things, a collapsed church.
Aasen says that they are aware that earthquakes can cause tsunamis, and that they therefore scouted the sea.
– We were excited about whether there would be a wave.
– The hotel was not evacuated. It was not very much drama, but disgusting considering what could have happened, he says.
Aasen says that he was also in Crete on September 27, then one person died after a building collapsed as a result of an earthquake of magnitude 5.8.
According to Sky News local police and fire brigade are working on Tuesday afternoon to check out buildings on the east coast of the island.
The media house further writes that the quake could be felt on several Greek islands, including Kárpathos, Kasos and Rhodes.
