The Brown biscuit factory in Saint Martin d’Hères

Many residents of the Grenoble area remember the good smell of cookies that floated around the Red Cross neighborhood in Saint Martin of Hères, where the Brown cookie factory was located.

A cookie with an eventful history

The Brown biscuit factory closed its doors on December 31, 1989 after a long fight waged by workers to maintain a factory threatened with closure during the various mergers that have followed one another since the 1950s.
Brown is a story that begins at the end of the 19th century, first in Claix, then to Grenoble, before arriving in Saint Martin d’Hères during the First World War.
It is a story whose starting point is common to that of SACER, a road maintenance company (now Colas).
Brown, this is a story that rhymes with social activism on the part of workers who have not been given gifts by successive factory management, far from it.

It is this story that we are telling you… thanks to those who worked on it… Since the production of this series (broadcast in 2011 on France Bleu Isère), some have left us but their testimony is essential to discover the reverse of the decor… and see that “the cookie was not necessarily cake”.
