The broken group for migrant trafficking in Burgas – one of the main ones in the country – 2024-02-21 14:08:06

The migrant trafficking group, which was broken up after a specialized police operation, was one of the main ones dealing with this type of crime in the country.

This became clear during a briefing in which district prosecutor Georgi Chinev, senior commissioner Stoyan Mandajiev – deputy director of the DG “Border Police”, senior commissioner Lachezar Momchev – director of RDGP – Burgas participated.

“The action was successful as a result of the excellent interaction between the structures of the National Security Service, the Border Police and the District Prosecutor’s Office. We currently have 10 people in custody. 6 of them have already been charged. Two of the persons are organizers. The prescribed punishment for them is imprisonment for up to 15 years. The case is being worked on very intensively, and in addition to the searches and seizures, many interrogations and identifications have been carried out. Work is currently ongoing. A team of supervising prosecutors has been established in the District Prosecutor’s Office, under whose direct supervision the proceedings are carried out” prosecutor Chinev said.

Senior Commissioner Stoyan Mandajiev said for his part that the capture of the criminal group has been under way since the beginning of the year. Numerous events were held and their crimes were documented. 9 of the detainees were caught in Burgas region. 10th at the Kalotina checkpoint.

The group worked with individuals from Turkish territory who sent them the location of the migrant groups’ locations. After that, the natives organized their transfer to the border with Serbia.

More than 30 groups of migrants were detained and processed by those arrested today. The price for their transfer has not been fixed – from 1000 to 3000 euros per person.

The cost of this criminal activity rises because it is difficult to cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border. The more difficult something is, the more expensive it becomes. We already have cases of 5,000-6,000 euros per person. I have no data on the complicity of Ministry of Internal Affairs officials”the deputy director of the DG “Border Police” also explained.

The smugglers, along with the illegal migrants, have been identified. Pre-trial proceedings have been instituted. We have been working on this group for a long time and have enough evidence. A large part of the detained persons have multiple criminal records – for theft, threats to kill, usury, use of false documents and others. Most of them are of Roma origin” said Senior Commissioner Lachezar Momchev.
