The Broadway Museum opened its doors on November 15th. Located at 45 West 45th Street in New York, this unique venue is an immersive experience in the world of theater and musicals.
The very first exhibition of the museum – The American theater seen by Hirschfeld – is dedicated to the illustrator and caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. This artist illustrated, among other things, the New York Times articles dedicated to Broadway shows. The exhibition thus presents drawings by him related to The Phantom of the Opera, A fiddler on the roof, The king and I, Funny Girl, The beauty and the Beast, Hairspray… We also see his caricatures of the biggest Broadway stars like Meryl Streep, Julie Andrews, Stephen Sondheim or even Liza Minnelli.
The museum was created by producer Julie Boardman in association with Playbill. Its permanent collections allow visitors to relive the history of American theater from 1732 to the present day through costumes, photos and videos. The part The making of a Broadway show aims to highlight all the people who are not on stage but who allow a show to exist.
The Museum of Broadway is already on my list for my next stay in NYC!
