UK residents will receive an extra day off next year to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6th. The holiday is Monday 8 May, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Sunday.
“The coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country,” Sunak said in a statement. “In recognition of this historic event, I am delighted to announce an additional day off for the whole of the UK next year.”
Carlo’s mother, Elisabetta, died on 8 September at the age of 96. Charles has since officially been king, but the coronation in Westminster Abbey is still a little out of place.
Elizabeth was crowned almost seventy years ago, on June 2, 1953. She was officially the monarch for over a year following the death of her father George VI in February 1952.
The British also had an official day off on the occasion of Elizabeth’s coronation. According to the British Prime Minister’s office, it has now been decided to make it a tradition so that families and communities can celebrate the historic event together.
