The proportion of the British strain in Estonia has increased from week to week, said Hanna Sepa, head of the infectious disease control department at the Estonian Department of Health.
She said “more attention needs to be paid to identifying and monitoring virus strains with mutations from South Africa, as they may have a higher potential for spread, which can lead to more severe cases”.
Estonian Health and Employment Minister Tanel Kik said that although there are currently about 70% of cases of infection with the more contagious British strain of the virus in Estonia, the proportion is constantly changing.
Sooner or later, the proportion of the British variety will reach 100%, as has been the case in the United Kingdom, and this fact must be taken into account when setting limits, according to Kick.
“We are dealing with a variant of the virus that has a higher risk of transmission, which means that we need stronger measures (…) to reduce the rate of infection,” the minister said.
The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population on March 16, as estimated by the Estonian Department of Health, is 1,491.75.
