She became the youngest Briton to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon since 1968. In the fourth round, wildcard contestant Emma Raducanu, 338-ranked, was pitted against 75-ranked Ajla Tomljanovic.
After an even first set, Tomljanovic finally won 6-4. But in the second set, the home crowd suddenly fell silent. Raducanu received medical attention at the bench and appeared to be hyperventilating.
“Shocked”
Medical staff were heard telling the judge to take a medical break due to breathing difficulties.
A shaken 18-year-old stepped off the field, and could not complete the match.
– I’m shocked. Emma must be very injured if she can not complete. I feel very sorry for her, I wish we could have completed the match. I wish her all the best, says Tomljanovic who was awarded the victory.
Tomljanovic will now face world setter Ashleigh Barty in the quarterfinals.
