Off the Cypriot coast, the landing ship RFA Lyme Bay is loaded with humanitarian supplies for Gaza, awaiting approval from all parties to begin its journey, Foreign Office officials in London have confirmed.
In a debate in the House of Commons, Under Secretary of State Andrew Mitchell noted that the British Government was doing everything possible to get more humanitarian aid to Gaza, “including focusing specifically on any opportunities by sea”.
As he added, Lyme Bay is loaded with supplies to Cyprus “and is ready to sail when we can be sure that this aid can be received and delivered.”
In a parallel debate in the House of Lords, the other Under-Secretary of State, Lord Bennion, said: “RFA Lyme Bay is off Cyprus, ready to go and that will require, as I said, the consent of both sides of the conflict to do a maritime aid landing. I can’t say anything more than that.”
