“Little Louis can finally wear long trousers,” said the headlines in the British newspapers. The five-year-old son of William and Kate broke a centuries-old tradition at the British court. Wearing shorts is a long-standing aristocratic tradition, regardless of the temperature outside or the season.
In the nobility, boys are dressed exclusively in shorts until their eighth birthday, as a sign of the ‘upper class’. Chinos are associated with the middle class, while jeans often represent the lower class. This fashion tradition dates back to before the 16th century. Initially, boys from prominent families wore dresses in their younger years, but this later changed to sailor suits with shorts. The transition to long trousers symbolizes the step towards adulthood.

Prince George, Louis’ older brother, even wore shorts in public until he was nine. Prince William and Princess Kate have always ensured that this custom was honored. But now they seem to have given in: little Louis appeared in long trousers, remarkably the same ones that his brother George wore a few years earlier. “Slowly but surely times are changing,” notes British etiquette expert William Hanson. “And whether this is a message to show how mature Prince Louis already is, or whether he just doesn’t like cold knees: Prince William and Princess Kate seem to mainly want to follow their own traditions.”
According to royalty experts, it was Prince William who loosened the reins for his son. A consequence of his own childhood, because royal experts say that William suffered a “childhood trauma” due to the constant expectation of wearing shorts. It is even suggested that William made a “secret pact” with Queen Elizabeth, which exempted him from this tradition and allowed him to follow his own clothing preferences. And Prince Louis is now allowed to do that by his father.
