LONDON – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak face a storm of criticism. Criticism it came after Sunak invited a homeless man to a charity. Sunak asked the man if he “worked in business” and wanted to go into the financial sector.

Sunak, a former Goldman Sachs banker and one of Britain’s richest people, was serving breakfast at a homeless shelter in London on Friday (23/12/2022), when he started chatting to a man who identified himself as Dean.

“Do you work in the company?” Sunak asked the man at one point during the conversation. Sunak asked as he handed the man a plate of sausage, toast and eggs.

“No, I’m homeless. I’m actually homeless,” the man replied, as quoted by Reuters.

His awkward conversation with the homeless man begins when the man asks Sunak if he is “fixing the economy”.

When the homeless man later said he was interested in business and finance, Sunak replied that he had also worked in finance. Sunak then asked, “Is this something you want to get into?”

“Yeah, I don’t mind,” Dean said. “But, I don’t know, I want to get through Christmas first,” he continued.

Angela Rayner, deputy leader of the opposition Labor Party, posted a clip of the conversation on Twitter, calling it “tortuous”. Another Labor MP, Bill Eserson, called Sunak “out of reach”.

Sunak’s accession to Britain’s prime minister in October made Sunak the wealthiest resident of 10 Downing Street, at a time when the country is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis.
