The British are in a hurry to buy fuel; the government asks not to panic

The British government on Friday called on the public to refrain from buying panicked fuel after part of the filling stations were closed because they were unable to receive supplies due to a shortage of truck drivers.

The issue caused by the coronavirus pandemic and Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU), leading to a crisis in the transport sector, has been widely reported in British newspapers.

However, the British Minister of Transport Grant Shaps insists that there is no fuel shortage in the country and the government is implementing measures to attract truck drivers.

“The recommendation would be to continue the routine as usual,” Shap said in an interview with Sky News after several BP and ExxonMobil-owned Esso filling stations were forced to shut down.

The Times reports that at least 50 of BP’s 1,200 service stations have run out of at least one type of fuel, but Shaps points out that five gas stations have been closed.

Experts and business leaders explain that the brexite and pandemic have reduced the number of truck drivers working in the UK, adversely affecting supply chains.
