Excitement at the Bremen fire brigade: At a demonstration by opponents of vaccination, three firefighters apparently also ran along, who identified themselves as officials. Management is angry and is considering consequences.
“The Bremen fire brigade distances itself very clearly from the appearances and statements of these groups,” says Philipp Heßmer, head of the Bremen fire brigade, in a report on Wednesday evening. The trigger for the outrage was three firefighters who took part in a demonstration by anti-vaccinationists on Monday, wearing vests with the handwritten inscription “Feuerwehr” and banners with the inscription “Feuerwehr Bremen”.

According to Hessemer, nobody is forbidden to take part in demonstrations or to express their opinions freely. “But with the use of fire brigade symbolism, those involved abused their affiliation with the fire brigade, publicly damaged the image of the Bremen fire brigade and thus the large majority of colleagues who acted in an exemplary manner.” The Bremen fire brigade is now examining “disciplinary consequences”, as it is in the notification reads.

According to the Bremen fire brigade, more than 95 percent of the approximately 1,300 employees of the professional fire brigade and members of the volunteer fire brigades are now boosted or otherwise meet the 2G+ status. In addition, further measures such as additional tests would be taken. “This leads to restrictions and, above all, requires patience. I have the utmost respect for my colleagues,” says Heßmer.

The employees were also offered several vaccinations, most recently with inactivated vaccines, according to the Bremen fire brigade. In addition, the fire brigade management points out in the report that the vaccination status of the employees is transmitted to the health department, and that there is also a facility-related vaccination requirement on duty. “Consequences for unvaccinated emergency services are now initially the responsibility of the health department,” said the Bremen fire brigade.
