The Brazilian Minister of Sports does not consider esports as a real sport

Ana Moser was chosen by the new president of Brazil, Lula, to head the Ministry of Sports, and during an interview she said that she does not consider esports as a true sport.

The official affirms that electronic sports are just entertainment. In addition, she stressed that competitions and video games are not unpredictable, but are fully programmable.

Moser, a former volleyball player, said: “In my opinion, esports are part of the entertainment industry, not sports. If you play a video game you just had fun. Digital competitions and games are not unpredictable, they are designed by a programmer. It’s programming, totally different from real sports.”

The minister also revealed that she has no intention of investing in esports. Moser also stressed that “esports at the federal level is not yet a reality.” She rules out any kind of support from the government for the next few months. Without entering the sports classification, esports players will not have access to Athlete Scholarships, the Sports Incentives Law and public resources in general.

The minister’s speech goes against the movement affecting esports in general, as various organizations and teams around the world have welcomed people with experience in traditional sports to increase the technical capacity of the team.
