Fatal outcome for the freediver in their thirties who was wanted from the night of Friday to Saturday, in the “Pierre et Vacances” sector, in Sainte-Anne. His lifeless body was finally recovered by the divers of the gendarmerie, this Saturday noon.
If one of these two freedivers – a 33-year-old man – was able to be recovered and released from the water unharmed, the other remained untraceable. According to the elements delivered by the emergency services, everything indicated that it would have sunk. Only his lamp and his snorkel could be found in this maritime sector where the maximum depth was around 10 m.
Despite the mobilization of an ambulance, divers from the gendarmerie and aquatic rescue workers from the fire brigade, the search conditions quickly became difficult. In addition to a lack of obvious visibility, in the middle of the night, the emergency services had to face a rough sea but also the presence of sargassum which prevented from launching any boat.
Finally, the searches resumed by the gendarmerie at daybreak finally found the freediver who seemed to practice underwater fishing, around noon. The latter was unfortunately lifeless and it was far too late to hope to revive him.
