On May 24, 2022, 50 years have passed since the founding of BMW M GmbH. Almost a quarter of a year earlier, this division of the BMW Group demonstrates in its current products a sense of tradition and the spirit of a significant jubilee.
Customers who opt for the BMW M or a BMW equipped with the M Sport package, dated March 2022, can have the front and rear of the car as well as the wheel centers inspired by the classic “BMW Motorsport” logo. As an alternative to the conventional BMW logo, it signals the passion for motorsport and the roots of the BMW M brand. This unique offer in the history of the BMW M will be available from the end of January 2022.
In addition to special features, 50 iconic and historically significant BMW M paints will be offered for selected models in the 2022 jubilee year. These colors include Dakar Yellow, Fire Orange, Daytona Violet, Macao Blue, Imola Red or Frozen Marina Bay Blue. All refer to the different eras of the BMW M’s 50-year history.
The BMW logo with mutually offset semicircles in blue, purple and red was first used in 1973 on the BMW Motorsport GmbH race car, which was founded a year earlier. In 1978, and with the premiere of the BMW M1, three colored stripes appeared, leaning to the right and leaning on the letter M. Even outside the motoring scene, this connection became a trademark with an extremely high recognition and identification value. The legendary BMW M1 was the only high-performance production car of the BMW M, which, in addition to the logo with three colored stripes, also bore the historical emblem of motorsport. In both logos, blue means BMW, red symbolizes racing and purple expresses the connection between the two. Over time, purple has turned dark blue, and BMW Motorsport GmbH has been operating under the name BMW M GmbH since 1993.
However, nothing has changed with the high symbolic power of the brand and logo. In the fiftieth year of its existence, this division is more successful than ever before and is the world’s leading company in the segment of high-performance and high-performance cars.

BMW M GmbH has set a further sales record in 2021. During 2022, the company will launch the BMW M3 Touring for the first time. In addition, especially performance-oriented fans of the brand can look forward to an extraordinary special model of the BMW M4 Coupé series. The successor to the successful BMW M2 is also at an advanced stage of series development. At the same time, the electrification of the BMW M brand is moving forward. In the jubilee year, the first electrified high-performance model in the history of BMW M GmbH will be launched.
BMW M GmbH will celebrate its anniversary not only with attractive news, but also with a number of events. Annual performances are scheduled for May 2022 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como in northern Italy, followed by the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK and the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California. The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring will also be a welcome opportunity for BMW M GmbH to evaluate its own success story with fans and inspire them for the future.
