The new generation of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé appeared with a new, more sporty design as a regular modification of the existing model. Technically, the novel is closely related to the recently launched new 1 Series and continues to use a front-wheel drive platform, unlike the 2 Series Coupé, which adheres to rear wheel drive.
Bernhard Blattel, BMW’s head of product management in the compact car segment, said the goal of the redesign was to shift the look to more sportiness. “The back of the previous generation was very polar, so we changed it completely, and changed the roof to get a better shape,” he said.
At the front of the car is a redesigned kidney grille, which will be offered with an illuminated bezel under the ‘Iconic’ moniker. A subtle ‘2’ on the iconic Hoffmeister curve on the C-pillar has been added, and for the first time customers can also choose a gloss black roof.
More space
The novel is longer by 20 mm compared to the previous version (4546 mm in total), it has also increased by 15 mm in width (to 1800 mm) and height (to 1435 mm), which has contributed to increasing the internal space.
The interior has also undergone complete changes, with many design elements carried over from the 1 Series. This includes a curved touchscreen with the latest BMW OS9 software, which has led to a reduction in physical buttons. The iDrive rotary controller is missing, but at least we see fixed touch buttons on the left side of the display. The press release also talks about voice control using “natural speech”, but the question remains whether it is even in our native language.
Sports seats
In addition to better interior space, the automaker also promises better seats with more pronounced lateral guidance and the option to pay extra for even M sports seats with an illuminated M logo, basic seats can be damaged too.
The interior will be completely leather-free on all surfaces, including the steering wheel. Cloth upholstery will be standard for the seats, Veganza leather combined with alcantara will be an additional cost. The interior will also offer dynamic illumination of the brushed aluminum interior trim, which will depend on the driving mode, and there will also be a head-up display.
Two petrol engines and two diesel engines work under the hood, one of which is combined with a 48V electric motor with 15 kW and 55 Nm of torque. It is integrated into the seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic transmission.

Compared to the previous one, the novel is more rigid in torsion and in the connection of the body with chassis components. The silent blocks of the front axle are also stronger, and both the front and the three-link rear axle have several newly developed components, also with the aim of reducing the weight.
Higher stability and better chassis
The sports version of the M235 also received reinforcement strips in the engine compartment, which is optional for the 220. It also has a wider front wheel track for better handling and wider tires. BMW has also changed the dampers to reduce lateral movements on all versions of the new car, the M235 is offered with adaptive M suspension, lowered by 8 mm, and sports steering.
It is also worth mentioning the brake system, in which the pressure is created by an electric motor with a pump, not the driver’s foot with a vacuum lifter. According to the car manufacturer, brake pressure will be created faster. The interventions of the establishment system are also faster. The M235 version offers four-piston front brake calipers as well as larger discs.
The standard size of the wheels is 17 inches, the M Sport package brings 18-inch wheels, and for an additional cost up to 19″ wheels, in the M Technology package for the M235 version. All new driving aids – modern driving aids too of course, many of which are required according to European homologation regulations.
