All nations want to go to the moon, in astronaut circles the earth’s satellite is very popular right now. But this time no one has to fly up, the moon is coming straight to us.
Tonight we can see a particularly large full moon over Germany if the weather is right. He even becomes the Blue Moon this time.
BILD explains what’s going on in the night sky.
After its first appearance at the beginning of August, our earth satellite is showing its full size for the second time today. This time, too, it comes particularly close to the earth, so that it is not only full, but also appears huge.
This is how the moon weather will be
But if you want to enjoy it, you have to get up early: Because the closest to earth on its orbit, the moon will reach tonight at 3:36 a.m., according to the Association of Star Friends.
And according to the German Weather Service (DWD), unfortunately not all moon friends can take a look at the blue moon. According to the forecast, it will be heavily overcast, especially on the coasts. Clouds could loosen inland and around Frankfurt/Main. According to the forecast, the best chances are in Lower Saxony, Brandenburg or Saxony-Anhalt.
The graphic, which was created on the basis of the DWD forecast for around three in the morning, shows what the sky looks like on the night of the blue moon, where a particularly large number of clouds cover the moon and where the super moon can possibly be seen.

Attention: The distance between the earth and its satellite this time is a good 357,000 kilometers. For comparison: The average distance of the moon in its orbit is a good 380,000 kilometers.
The “Blue Moon” is not blue at all
There’s a reason we can see the full moon twice this month: the cycle between two full moons is always 29.5 days, but August has 31 days. And this time it fits perfectly.
The special thing about it: because two full moons are so rare in one calendar month, the second is called a blue moon. And rare means: The next time there will be the Blue Moon on May 31, 2026.
The fact that it is called “Blue Moon” has nothing to do with its color. Rather, it should make it clear how rare a double XXL moon is in one month. “Once in a blue moon” (translated roughly “every jubilee year”) is what English speakers say when something very rare happens. In the song “Blue Moon” (1934), for example, this rare occurrence refers to love.
