Eventually, the nation’s New Plymouth Astronomical Society piqued the locals’ curiosity and confirmed that the sky-high event was more a phenomenon caused by human activity after the SpaceX rocket launch than a suspected alien activity.
The community shared on Facebook, “The ‘spiral’ seen in the sky at around 7:30 tonight was most likely a ‘fuel dump’ or ‘exhaust smoke’ from the SpaceX rocket launch.” made a statement.
The statement continued:
Similar effects have been seen before, possibly with SpaceX’s Globalstar 2 FM15 passing New Zealand at the time.
In the video below, the rocket is seen passing south of New Zealand for its flight around 5:30 PM, just over an hour later. It will probably pass again in about 90 to 120 minutes, i.e. around 19.30.
