When? The individual jumping ended on Wednesday. The team competition is decided on Friday and Saturday.
Where? The Olympic jumps are decided at Equstrian Park, southwest Tokyo.
High obstacles
The highest obstacle on the track in the final round of the final was 166 centimeters. The widest was 175 centimeters.
Olympic silver is the thing in equestrian sports
When Peder Fredricson rode home an Olympic silver again, he also made sure that equestrian sports’ fine medal result in the Olympics continues.
Five Olympics in a row, equestrian sports have won medals – all times it has been silver. In 2004 the jumping team came second, in 2008 the show jumper Rolf-Göran Bengtsson rode home a silver medal, in 2012 it was the field competition rider Sara Algotsson Ostholt’s turn to get a silver medal around her neck and in 2016 and 2021 it is Peder Fredricson who fixed the medals.
Now the question is whether the equestrian sport in Tokyo on Saturday breaks the silver trend and rides home an Olympic gold in team in jumping.
Bloody horse was allowed to continue
During the Irishman Cian O´Connor’s ride inside the final track, his horse Kilkenny began to bleed nosebleeds.
On the white horse, the blood splatter was clearly visible, but the rider never noticed it but completed the ride. The crew made a time error.
When blood is seen on the horse, according to the rules, it must be picked off the track. However, this never happened and after the class, the FEI, the International Equestrian Federation, announced that the rule only applies when there is blood on the horse’s mouth or sides. Nasal blood is not a reason for disqualification.
After the ride, the Irish star said that the horse was examined carefully, and that he was feeling well. Despite this, Cian O´Connor chooses not to compete anymore during the Olympics.
The crew should actually have been part of the Irish team, but on Wednesday night Cian O´Connor announced on Instagram that out of concern for the horse, he has nevertheless chosen to withdraw from the team competition.
His place in the team will instead be taken by reserve Shane Sweetnam.
Norwegian hope did not have the strength
Norway has not qualified any jumping team for Tokyo, but experienced Geir Gulliksen was the only Norwegian jump in the individual final.
The 61-year-old has solid experience, and has competed at a high level for many years, but this Wednesday most things went wrong.
Geir Gulliksen and the horse Quatro did not play together at all and the crew tore down one obstacle after another. When eight obstacle barriers had fallen into the ground, and the crew had accumulated 32 errors, the Norwegian chose to interrupt the ride.
Veterinary inspection
On Thursday, it is competition time for the show jumpers, but in the afternoon to undergo a mandatory veterinary inspection.
