The blockade of Kaliningrad began NOW

Lithuanian authorities have imposed a blockade on Russia’s Kaliningrad region, banning EU-sanctioned goods from passing through their territory. The ban was announced on Friday and went into effect Saturday night.

Among the goods on which the EU has imposed sanctions are coal, metals, construction materials and high technology. Kaliningrad Governor Anton Alikhanov said the ban would include about 50 per cent of goods imported into Kaliningrad.

Alikhanov urged citizens not to panic shopping and said two ships were already carrying goods between Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg, and seven more would join the route by the end of the year. “Our ferries will handle all the cargo,” he said on Saturday.

The command of the Russian Baltic Fleet is located in Kaliningrad.
