He had been threatening since the night of Saturday to Sunday. The boulder fell on Monday evening, near the Garde tunnel, on the cantonal road which links Sion to the commune of Evolène.
The road is therefore closed. Evolène, just like Sunday evening when the road had been preventively closed, is again cut off from the world. According to our information, no one was injured during the landslide. A helicopter is currently flying over the area.
The block had moved more than 70 centimeters
“We have been monitoring this block the size of a small chalet for four years,” Raphael Mayoraz, head of the natural hazards section of the canton of Valais, told us on Monday. It is one of more than 50 sites, including two others in the Evolène sector, which are subject to increased control.

Every ten minutes, measuring devices send the position of these rocks to a server. If, within an hour, these move more than 6 millimeters, the team of the cantonal geologist receives an alert SMS.
