Security test
BYD has subjected its battery to various safety tests, such as pinching with sharp objects to check its resistance to thermal leakage. “In terms of battery safety and power density, BYD’s Blade battery has obvious advantages”says Professor Ouyang Minggao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University.
The Blade battery has been developed by BYD for several years. Its novelty is that the singular cells are arranged together in a matrix and then they are inserted into a battery. Also, due to its optimized structure, the use of battery space is increased by more than one 50% compared to conventional ones.

According to those responsible for its development, while the battery was subjected to different tests, there was no smoke or fire after it had been penetrated, and its surface temperature only reached peaks of 300ºC although it remained below 260ºC.
Extreme bending
Under the same conditions, a conventional lithium battery exceeded 500ºC and burned violently. This implies that electric vehicles equipped with the Blade battery would be much less susceptible to catching fire, even when they are seriously damaged.
The Blade also successfully passed other tests, such as crushing, extreme bending, or oven heating at a constant temperature of 300ºC. It was also overloaded by up to 260%. In no case did it catch fire or explode.
The battery was heated in an oven to over 300 degrees.

Other qualities of this accumulator lie in a high resistance to exothermic (chemical) reactions, slow release of heat and low generation of it, as well as its ability not to release oxygen during breakdowns or catch fire easily.
