The United States (US) and Russia are again at odds. The tension occurred after a Russian fighter jet was accused of crashing drone belonged to the US until it fell into the Black Sea.
The accusation was made by the US military. US says droneit was on a routine mission in international airspace. Then, 2 Russian fighter jets tried to intercept it.
US European Command said the incident was the result of an “unprofessional act by Russia”. Before colliding with the US drone, two Russian Su-27 fighters intercepted the unmanned MQ-9 Reaper over international waters and one cut off its propeller.
“Several times prior to the collision, the Su-27 dumped fuel and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a reckless, unfriendly and unprofessional manner,” the US European Command said.
US Summons Russian Ambassador
The US then immediately summoned the Russian Ambassador in Washington DC to protest the downing of the drone.
“We engaged directly with Russia, again at a senior level, to express our strong objections to this unsafe and unprofessional intercept that led to the downing of a US drone,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price. reported by AFP, Wednesday (15/3/2023).
Ambassador Russia in Washington DC, said Price, was present at the US Department of State on Tuesday (14/3) afternoon local time. Price also mentioned that the US Ambassador in Moscow had registered “strong objections”.
Price in his statement also called this incident a clear violation of international law.
