The picture emerging from the opinion polls is that of a pending situation. Citizens are not happy with either the government or the opposition. 62% are dissatisfied with the government and 75% with the opposition, according to the recent Metron Analysis poll, which was presented at Mega.
Citizens’ image of the government is of greater importance because it makes the decisions that affect their lives and daily routines. As recorded in the poll, the sectors where the government is doing best are tourism, with a 63% positive assessment, which, however, is improving regardless of the policies overseeing it, the digital transformation of the state (60%) and defense armour. of the country (48%). From there the descent begins.
How is government work evaluated?
40% have a negative image regarding the attraction of investments, the environment 49%, infrastructure 55%, the protection of individual rights 56%, immigration 59%, tax policy 61%, labor 61%, education 66%, public health 71%, dealing with natural disasters 70%, dealing with inflation 70%, dealing with corruption 74% and crime 78%.
This is not the objective situation of the country, but the one that the citizens have formed in their minds, as the question concerns “impressions of the work of the government”. And it is she who determines their behavior and choices. The rate of dissatisfaction, 60% or more, in key areas such as health, education, inflation, crime, should ring many bells in the Maximos Palace and the relevant ministries. Especially since the image of the government is constantly being eroded.
In 2019, negative impressions of government policy on health were 41%, on education 49%, on tackling crime 52%, on the environment 44%, on immigration 25%. Even among ND voters, positive opinions on all the above issues are in the minority, from 46% on Education to just 22% on crime.
“Waterloo” for women
Waterloo is recorded among women: 21% have a positive impression of government policy in education, 15% in health, 15% in dealing with inflation, 15% in corruption, 10% in crime. In the 17-27 age group, the government remains unshakable not only in education, where positive impressions are found at 14%, but also in the economy 12%, public health 8%, dealing with natural disasters 8%, inflation 10% corruption 8% and crime 4%.
The working class is the most dissatisfied of all in all sectors of government work, the small and medium-sized with the tax policy, only 13% evaluate it positively, the farmers with inflation and the response to natural disasters (13% positive evaluation in both two cases).
In Attica, there is great dissatisfaction in the areas of the environment, public health, inflation and crime, in the rest of the regions in infrastructure, immigration, labor, health, education, and dealing with natural disasters. The residents of critical regions (Macedonia – Thrace and Aegean islands) have a good image of the country’s defense armor and foreign policy, with positive evaluations ranging from 48% – 55%.
Which need, immediate, interventions
The “cardiogram” of government policy shows that improvement moves are needed immediately, at least in the critical areas of everyday life, if the Prime Minister wants to have three clear years after the European elections to advance his reforms. It also shows the potential of the opposition to exercise more effective criticism, as long as it is able to utilize them.
