The Bishop of Thalassery in Idayalekhana expresses concern over the use of love traps to ensnare young women.

Mar Joseph Pamplani

Kannur: The pastoral letter of Thalassery Archdiocese Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplani says that incidents of love traps becoming traps for girls are worrisome. Pamplani expresses such concern in his pastoral epistle to be read in parish churches on Easter. The pastoral letter says that male and female children should be given equal rights in patrimony and dowry system should be stopped.

“Our country and culture are currently far behind in respecting women. It cannot be forgotten that women face neglect in the church and society. Over time patriarchy was strengthened in the society with the support of sports power. It is disgraceful that illegal dowry system exists in our society and in many forms. The thought that woman is the greatest wealth should be strengthened. The time has come to put an end to the misogynistic practice of linking marriage with wealth,’ says the pastoral letter.

Our society has not yet fully understood the Supreme Court ruling that daughters have equal rights to inheritance as sons. Pamplani also says that by ensuring that daughters have equal rights in inheritance like sons, the extravagance of jewelery at the time of marriage can be put to an end.

The incidents of cheating our daughters by falling into love traps are increasing alarmingly. The pastoral letter also says that care should be taken against this.
