The Bishop of Austin in the United States offered a special Eucharist for women prisoners sentenced to death

Texas: Bishop Joe Vasquez of Austin in the United States offered a special Eucharist for seven women prisoners sentenced to death in a Texas prison. Five inmates converted to Catholicism after Holy Mass at the Mountain View Unit prison in Gatesville, Texas. The Holy Mass was part of a three-day conference of the Catholic Prison Ministry Coalition (CPMC).

The bishop spoke to the prisoners about the Parable of the Prodigal Son during his homily during Mass. The Father spoke of God’s mercy in calling sinners back into His family. Regardless of what you have done in the past, you belong to the church just like everyone else. The Father told the women that these walls may separate you, but walls can never bring Christ down.

This ministry with and accompanying prisoners is very important. The bishop also spoke about what Jesus Christ will ask of each of us in the last day. I was a foreigner and you accepted me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. The bishop also quoted verses from St. Matthew’s Gospel, “I was in prison, and you came to me.”

Jesus did not say how many times he went to church or how many times he prayed. How did you take care of someone else? The father said that the Lord has spoken through the word. CPMC Executive Coordinator Karen Clifton said the group’s goal is to provide a basic formation for Catholics who want to minister to the incarcerated.

In the 1990s, he ministered to many women sentenced to prison in Texas. Many of them have been there for decades. Thanks to the efforts of Deacon Ronnie Lastovica, Pastoral Care Coordinator for the Diocese of Austin. Five women converted to Catholicism during the work of deacons.

Their condition of imprisonment is seen as something similar to monastic life. I saw their transformation in the 90s when they converted. They are prayerful women. Their prayer life is very deep. Clifton said they participate in the nuns’ activities and prayers.
