The greatest basketball player of all time? LeBron James is one of the outstanding athletes of the past twenty years – also because he uses his sport as a platform for social commitment and political messages. Image: AFP
In his biography of LeBron James, Jeff Benedict paints the picture of a social climber with a political stance. However, the author does not dare to address two important questions.
The list of attempts to thoroughly explore one of the preeminent sporting figures of the past twenty years is respectable, if not particularly long. What’s missing from all of these works is that they simply couldn’t be the final word because LeBron James’ professional career isn’t over yet. The best basketball player in the world definitely wants to continue another NBA season, the 21st, with the Los Angeles Lakers. It starts in a few days. And probably an appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
Logically, the summary “LeBron – A Biography” from 2008 did not include an appreciation of his brilliant deeds, which include his four championship successes, winning the gold medals in Beijing and London and his first place in the all-time basket scorer table with currently 38,652 points. The 2017 paean “Return of the King: LeBron James, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Greatest Comeback in NBA History” focused solely on his return from Miami and the longed-for home region title that erased old animosities that had lingered since his move to Florida four years earlier.
