The transfer window this summer once again demonstrated that professional football clubs are spending fortunes buying players. English teams have by far the greatest financial resources to build their teams.
>> 24.7 billion euros. This is the cumulative amount of transfers paid by the 100 football clubs in the world which have invested the most to assemble their team, according to the CIES Football Observatory. These are the workforce as of September 11, 2023 and the transfer costs include any planned bonuses.
>> This graph presents these 100 clubs divided by league. A total of 19 professional football leagues are represented, including the second divisions of England and Italy. The size of the bar depends on the amount invested (it is specified in bold after the name of the club). You can zoom in on a country/league by clicking on its name in the graph or selecting it from the top left bar.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris St-Germain: the 4 billionaire clubs
>> The transfer amounts of four clubs reach at least one billion euros, including three English and one French:
Manchester United (1.150 m€)
Chelsea FC (1.134 m€)
Manchester City (1.042 m€)
Paris St-Germain (1.000 m€)
>> The English Premier League is, by far, the most important in this ranking. It fields 19 of its 20 teams in the world top 100, including 8 in the top 10. Total spending on transfers and player bonuses reaches 10.2 billion euros.
>> The Italian Serie A is second, far behind the English league. These 15 clubs have invested €2,970 million to assemble their team in 2023. Thanks to PSG, France is in 3rd place. The total amount of transfers from the 11 French clubs represented amounts to €2,561 million. Spain (€2,425 million) and Germany (€2,311 million) follow closely.
>> Excluding the “big 5” (the 5 most important football championships), CIES data illustrates the rise of Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom made a sensational entrance during the summer transfer window with the transfers of Benzema, Neymar and other Mané. Four Saudi Pro League clubs invested €914 million to assemble their team.
PSG is the club to have invested the most in attackers
>> By position, Liverpool is the club which has invested the most in goalkeepers (€73m). Manchester United spent €383m to build their defense. Real Madrid is number 1 for purchasing midfielders (€447m). Finally, PSG went all out on its attackers: €557m, an amount much higher than number two (Manchester United, with €411m). We can cite the transfer amounts of Kylian Mbappé (€180m) and Randal Kolo Muani (€95m).
