Russia and China are currently facing the biggest challenges for the NATO alliance: that is one of the conclusions of the NATO Summit. Politicians from 30 countries have gathered at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to discuss the organisation’s development over the next ten years. The meeting was also an opportunity for many national leaders to meet with US President Joe Biden for the first time.
The meeting of NATO leaders this time is quite short and full of symbolism. Alliance members met in Brussels to reaffirm close cooperation and to hear clearly from the new US President, Joe Biden, that he, unlike his predecessor Donald Trump, does not question NATO ‘s role.
Europe can count on US support
Biden was not surprised and made it clear that the NATO alliance is also important to America.
“NATO is extremely important for US interests. Without such an alliance, we would have to figure it out. It allows America to act in the world like never before. Secondly, throughout my career, I have reiterated that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty [uzbrukums vienai no NATO dalībvalstīm ir uzskatāms par uzbrukumu visām] is a sacred commitment.
I always remind Americans that when we were attacked for the first time since World War II, NATO intervened on the basis of Article 5. That is why I want Europe to know that it can count on US support. “
Democracies must stick together
Russia’s policy is still considered to be the biggest challenge for NATO. However, it has now been joined by China, which has recently joined actively developing his army. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg drew attention to the fact that China already has the largest military fleet in the world.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudo believes that NATO must set an example of a democratic alternative not only to its own people, but to the whole world.
“Cooperation between Russia and NATO countries is currently worse than in the last several decades. That is why we need to join forces. Furthermore, it is not just about Russia, but also about the rise of authoritarianism in many parts of the world. It is increasingly competing and challenging NATO nations. ”
In the morning, the President of Latvia Egils Levits also met with the Prime Minister of Canada. As is known, Canadian forces at the moment leads the rest of NATO troops in our country. The president said that Trudo was positive that Canadian troops would continue to lead the mission after 2023.
Levit, together with the President of Lithuania and the Prime Minister of Estonia, also met with Biden.
Biden’s election has benefited NATO
NATO leaders also agreed to increase the Alliance’s budget. However, the specific amounts could only be named after one year. Levit supports this intention.
“Russia remains the most serious challenge to NATO – geopolitical and military. We expect NATO to be united on this challenge.
We will also continue to look at other issues, especially technology, so that NATO, so that the West, so that Europe does not lag behind in the technological race, and what NATO can do to tackle climate change, ”said Levits.
Levits also added that with the election of the new US president, the atmosphere in NATO has improved and it can also contribute to faster progress on various practical issues.
