The Biggest Planet in the Universe: ROXs 42 Bb and Beyond

Jakarta

The universe has all kinds of interesting things from stars more than 2,000 suns in size to supermassive black holes that can rip apart celestial bodies.

So far, the most massive knowledge known about the universe is around what is in our solar system, where Earth and other planets are located. But outside the solar system, there are still many mysteries, especially the existence of large planets.

In our own solar system, the largest planet is Jupiter. This gas giant planet weighs more than twice as much as all the other planets in the solar system combined.

The fifth planet from the Sun has a radius of 69,911 km, which makes it roughly 11 times wider than Earth’s 6,371 km. If Earth were the size of a coin, then Jupiter would be the size of a soccer ball.

In terms of surface area, Jupiter measures 61,418,738,571 km², compared to Earth’s 510,064,472 km².

But even though Jupiter is the largest known planet in the Solar System, there are even bigger planets out there. What planet is it?

The Biggest Planet in the Universe

Launch BBC Science Focus, the largest planet in the known universe is a giant exoplanet named ROXs 42 Bb. This gas giant, is almost 500 light years from Earth.

According to NASA, the planet ROXs 42 Bb, which was discovered in 2013, has an estimated radius of 1.12 times that of Jupiter.

It is known, as new details about the galaxy and the universe around it emerge, it is likely that scientists will find a new planet that is even larger than ROXs 42 Bb.

However, scientists say the line is blurred. So about the classification of planets and their types as space objects is still unclear.

So far, the planet has been categorized as a brown dwarf, an object somewhere between a planet and a star.

Brown dwarfs are failed stars, essentially not gaining enough mass to initiate nuclear fusion in their cores. Instead, planets formed from the accumulation of debris left over from the birth of these stars.

Brown dwarfs are also too big to count as planets, which are technically classified as being around 13 times the mass of Jupiter. ROXs 42 Bb is estimated to have a mass of nine Jupiters so it can still be defined as a planet.
