Psycho – the name of Alfred Hitchcock’s cult horror film from 1960 and the word that some actresses would probably use to describe filming with one of the most famous directors of all time. The British director often focused his attention on blonde actresses, for whom he had a weakness. For example, he spoke of Madeline Carroll, whom he cast in his film The 39 Steps, as a “Birmingham rally”. He then handcuffed her to a fellow actor for 18 hours, claiming he had lost the key to the handcuffs.
In addition to rough sex jokes, actresses experienced psychological terror with him on the set and sometimes faced sexual harassment. Hitchcock’s biggest victim was the actress Tippi Hedren, the main heroine of the horror movie The Birds, whom he tried to kiss and touch all the time. But the actress didn’t complain about anything at the time, because there was no talk of sexual harassment. “If it happened today, I would be very rich,” said Hedren in one of the interviews for her book Typesin which he describes the harassment.
After the actress rejected him, Hitchcock began to take revenge on her. While filming The Birds, he promised her that she would be attacked by robotic animals. In the end, it was real frightened birds that flew at her and pecked at her. Hedrenová ended up in the hospital for several days after the shooting. In addition, the director ruined the actress’s career by rejecting film roles for other directors on her behalf, claiming she was unavailable.
