Romania. My car drives on a county road. I am thinking about the news above and trying to digest it. I try to only look ahead, otherwise I know what awaits me. What actually awaited me, on every trip on some county road, not to mention communal. A bleak picture of so many dogs thrown away, nobody’s, with no perspective, except maybe that of death.
You must admit, dear reader, that we have lived together so many episodes of this kind. We moved on impassively. Some of us have done a little good. I’ve seen dogs dumped, I’ve seen bitches with abandoned puppies, and each time I asked myself, why… in time, I found the answer I didn’t want.
First of all, the conscience of the Romanian to take care of an animal. The conscience of that Romanian who, beyond bad treatment, prefers to drink his last money at the village tavern instead of neutering a dog. That Romanian who, when he sees himself overcome by the situation, throws the chickens on the sides of roads or forests, without flinching.
Then, the public policies of the Romanian state. He, our little state, has failed in many of the essential areas, this being one in which it seems to be impotent for good. I went through the updated Law 205/2004, line by line, and I confess to you, dear reader, that I have not laughed so bitterly in a long time. The text of the law itself creates an idyllic world, where every animal in Romania can have its own festival, in the yard of its owner, being celebrated every day as it should be.
The reality? – full shelters, animal protection services, ineffective.
I don’t even want to think about other countries and how they value their man’s best friend. I have to overtake. I look to the left. I forget about overtaking because I just saw three souls on the side of the road. Probably thrown away by an irresponsible owner. What superior beings we are! That seems to be the case, isn’t it?
