Milos Raonic explains why the Big Three have “turned fan expectations upside down.
Milos Raonic believes that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have ‘shaken everyone’s expectations of what is normal’ by being so dominant over such a long period of time. After a two-year hiatus, former world No. 3 Raonic returned to tennis in June and this week took part in his third tournament since returning. After his Toronto Masters Round of 16 loss to Mackenzie McDonald, we have Asked Raonic if the level of men’s tennis has improved over the past few years, as it is now more common to see a player ranked outside the top 50 knock down a seed.
In his response, Raonic suggested that this is only surprising to some because the Big Three impose anomalous standards.
Raonic: The Big Three have upended expectations.
“I think having three exemplary legendary athletes in one sport, not even in one generation, but in one sport at the same time, kind of upset everybody’s expectations (or recalibration) of which is normal, isn’t it? If you look at the tournaments, you will see that all three are playing.
Obviously, I’m talking about the time when the three men took the Masters seriously. I think we kinda forgot about it because they focused on Grand Slams for the last two years. When I started on the tour it was mostly them and Andy.
I would say that 60 to 70% of the semi-finals were played between them. And maybe on clay, David Ferrer was a game-changer. So, yeah, there were three guys who were there all the time and winning most of the events,” Raonic said, via Sportskeeda.
