Japan reached the decision just three days after the US pharmaceutical company applied for approval.

“So far, there is no drug available to treat the Coronavirus here, so approval of this drug is a big step for us,” a Japanese Health Ministry official said during a press briefing.

He added that the drug will be given to patients who have severe symptoms of Covid-19 disease.

In the absence of other approved treatments for the disease, there is increasing interest in the drug worldwide.

Ramsdevir, who is taken intravenously by the patient, obtained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration last week for emergency use of the disease caused by the emerging coronavirus.

Gilead says the drug has improved results for people with respiratory disease, and has provided data indicating that it works best when taken in the early stages of infection.

Japan has recorded just over 16,000 cases and fewer than 800 deaths, the lowest prevalence rate compared to other major industrialized countries.
