The Big Screen: Celebrating 5 years of Breaking Stereotypes about the Elderly through Film

Old people. The fifth edition will take place from July 4 to 9 at the Cinemes Girona.

The Big Screen, the Barcelona International Film Festival for the Elderly celebrates its fifth edition and is consolidated as an intergenerational cinematographic meeting place to dismantle, through cinema, prejudices and stereotypes about the elderly. The program will offer some thirty proposals, among which the projection of the film ‘20,000 species of bees’ stands out, winner of the award for best leading role at the Berlinale.

The festival will be held between July 4 and 9 at the Girona Cinemas. In total, nine feature films and eighteen short films will be screened, as well as a series of dialogues, round tables and master classes with the teams of these productions or around their theme.

The Big Screen also celebrated its fifth anniversary yesterday with an open-air concert in the Vila de Gràcia square by Son de la Rambla.

Tribute to Teresa Gimpera
Each year it is awarded lifetime achievement award of the festival. In previous editions, the award has been for artists of the stature of Montserrat Carulla, Carme Elías and Carme Sansa. This year the honoree will be the actress and model Teresa Gimpera, a member of the Gauche Divine who accumulates more than a hundred film titles and a life example to dismantle prejudices and stereotypes about the elderly.

Cinema as a tool for change and awareness
He Barcelona International Film Festival for the Elderly is a project of the entity The speaker in collaboration with the Department of Childhood, Youth, the Elderly and People with Disabilities of the Barcelona City Council. The Big Screen wants to promote cinema as tool for dialogue, reflection and social transformation on the imaginaries that society perpetuates on the elderly.

The programming offers different views with themes related to love, care, loneliness, the digital divide, the climate emergency or intergenerational relationships.
