On Tuesday evening, the financial police stormed the allegedly illegal poker room of the poker king Peter Zanoni in Vienna-Simmering. At this point the forbidden game of skill was playing on eight cash game tables. It is actually only allowed to be offered by Casinos Austria.
As reported, Zanoni reopened the gates at Pentecost despite the ban. He relies on an opinion by a constitutional lawyer that is supposed to allow him to play poker. The Ministry of Finance recently stated to the KURIER that nothing has changed in the legal situation. Even within the poker scene, nobody believes that Zanoni’s right-wing view will hold up.
Financial police raid
So it was only a matter of time before it hit. On Tuesday evening, finance obviously wanted to get an overview of how the payment modalities are going. It was also checked in which employment relationship the dealers are. As reported months ago, these are often hired for a few hundred euros and de facto live exclusively on tips.
At the time, nobody at Finanz was available to comment on whether the casino would be closed was initially unclear.
