The Big Beer Price Report: How Munich’s Beer Prices Have Increased

München – Beer at Wiesn prices – even when the Oktoberfest is not taking place: If you want to enjoy your (after-work) beer in Munich on and around Marienplatz, you have to be prepared for high prices. The AZ took a closer look at 17 bars in downtown Munich – the big beer price report.

Beer prices in Munich: The “cheap” half in the old town is available for 4.30 euros

The “cheapest” half is still available in some restaurants, such as the “Stiftl” for 4.30 euros. There, the landlord, but also the Augustiner brewery, tries to keep the beer price for the customers as low as possible, says one of the waiters when the AZ stopped by on Wednesday afternoon. In times of inflation, with rising costs everywhere, this is of course not always possible.

Beer in Munich is getting more and more expensive: “Try everything to keep the prices low”

A large sign in front of the door advertises “Belles for only 4.30 euros”, which gives an idea of the prices that are sometimes charged in other restaurants, some just a few meters away. “The Lorenz (Innkeeper of the “Stiftl”, ed.) tries everything to keep the prices low – and I think it shows in comparison to others,” explains the waiter.

Where the beer in Munich’s old town is most expensive

You pay the most at the “Wildmosers am Marienplatz”, in the best location, directly opposite the town hall. Half a liter of beer costs a whopping 6.20 euros here. That’s another ten cents more than what you pay at the “Pschorr” directly on the Viktualienmarkt. Customers, especially tourists in the city center, are still willing to pay these prices.

As the managing director of the “Wildmosers” explains to the AZ, the higher prices do not mean fewer customers come to the bar – and the number of drinks ordered is also unchanged. The fact that the beer costs more money (compared to 5.50 euros in 2018) is not due to higher profits for him either. The purchase price and costs as well as the rent in the most prominent Munich location have risen so much due to inflation that the prices have to be adjusted accordingly.

Beer is becoming more expensive everywhere, not only in restaurants but also in retail. If you don’t buy your beer in the supermarket but want to drink it in a pub, you still have to pay relatively more. The brewery’s price adjustments are having a greater impact on the catering industry. “The cost increases that a landlord or operator of a gastro also has to pass on, of course, make the beer in the gastro more expensive in percentage terms than in retail,” explained Georg Schneider, President of the Bavarian Brewers’ Association, in an interview with the AZ last March.

Not everyone is willing to pay six euros for a light beer

Either way, beer is getting more and more expensive – and that’s causing resentment, especially among younger Munich residents. Maximilian S. (25) from Munich has a clear opinion on the subject: “I think the beer prices are too expensive because everyone – including students – should have the opportunity to drink beer in public restaurants and thus take part in public life. I’m personally ready for that (six euros, ed.) to pay, because one – or sometimes several – beers in the beer garden, especially on warm summer days, simply means quality of life for me. I wouldn’t be willing to pay much more.”

Beer prices in Munich have increased significantly since 2018

Compared to the 2018 beer price report, the prices for a light beer in downtown Munich have definitely risen significantly. Almost five years ago, the most expensive beer cost 5.50 euros (also at “Wildmosers”). Today that’s almost average. Back then, you could still get a light beer (0.5 litres) in some pubs for 3.80 euros – now a small beer (0.33 litres) costs more in many places.
