Big Apple is still popular among American students. The city is well at the top of the ranking of cities that attract new graduates offered by the Handshake platform, which connects students and employers.
This was already the case before the pandemic episode, precise CNBC, but the trend has only become more pronounced, as shown by the data collected on the number of applications recorded by New York companies: between 2022 and 2023, “this was multiplied by 6.7 compared to 2018-2019”. New York also has twice as many applications as Chicago, the city comes in second position in the ranking, just ahead of Dallas (3rd) and Los Angeles (4th) and far ahead of San Diego (14th) or Miami (15th).
However, Florida’s second city, along with Atlanta (5th) and Philadelphia (13th), is among the increasingly popular metropolises among American students, while Seattle (11th), San Diego (14th) and San Francisco (7th) appear less attractive than in previous years.
“The rise of remote work may have made it easier to work from anywhere, but young people are more determined than ever to succeed in one city: New York,” writes CNBC. But living there risks costing them dearly, warns the American chain’s website. “Manhattan is by far the most expensive place in the United States. The cost of living is more than twice the national average and the median rent remains at a record high of nearly $4,400. [soit 4 180 euros] per month.”
Another lesson from the survey: young graduates are more mobile than ever. In 2022, of the applications submitted through the platform, 83% were for jobs located outside the state where the student lived – that’s almost twice as many as in 2018-2019. For companies, “recruiting locally is definitely an outdated strategy”, Handshake concludes.
