The Biden administration may not remove razor wire on the Texas border

The US government should not remove the razor wire in Texas on the border with Mexico. This was upheld by a federal appeals court. The barrier was placed by the state to prevent illegal migration from Mexico to the US.

The ruling ended a decision by a federal judge in November 2023. The court then ruled that Texas was not allowed to install the barbed wire.

The Republican-led state in September built a 29-mile-long barbed wire fence in Eagle Pass, along the Rio Grande border river. The state sued the Biden administration because the federal Border Patrol cut the cord on helping immigrants. The court said that Texas is “likely to win that case” because the federal government would be violating state laws if the fence was removed.

The court’s decision came a few hours before President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke on the phone. After that conversation, Trump said he had agreed to stop illegal immigration from Mexico, but Sheinbaum said Mexico is already doing its part and has no interest in closing its boundaries. Trump has previously threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada and Mexico to crack down on illegal immigration and drug shipments.

In addition, the immigration of migrants to the US from Mexico has decreased by 40 percent compared to the peak of last December. This is largely due to the strict guidelines in Mexico.
