Nativity scene in the town hall of Béziers
Our Béziers organizations, with respect for their prerogatives and their reciprocal independence, are all attached to the Republic and to Secularism, to respect for the beliefs or lack of belief of all, that is to say to freedom of conscience.
Contrary to what was announced in the “journal de Béziers”, the Nativity crib is not “in front of the town hall” – nor, for that matter, in a church – but has been installed again inside the house. city hall of Béziers this Thursday, December 2, 2021 by the Mayor of Béziers.
Robert Ménard, by handing again a Nativity crib, publicly claimed as a symbol of Christianity, within the town hall, our common house, that of Marianne and high places of the Republic, continues a dangerous game by using religion to for political purposes.
We believe that the provocations of the Mayor of Béziers harm freedom of conscience and harmony. They pit citizens against each other in a city whose population is already particularly weakened by the economic and social situation.
We ask the Prefect and the Interministerial Committee for Secularism to act to put an end to this proven case of separatism, and to enforce the separation of Churches and State, the law of 1905, because it ensures everyone freedom of conscience, allows all free and equal citizens in rights to live together, because it is a bulwark against communitarianism and confrontation between communities.
It is not up to the Mayor to award the correct points between the different religions, or to organize a municipal cult to return in practice to the Concordat.
We ask to be received by the Sub-prefect of Béziers in delegation.
