A net of onions is cheaper than 1 or 2 separate ones. It’s just that not everything works for everyone right away. So what’s the best way to store onions? We list several options.
Various types of onions
There are various types of onions: red, yellow, white and sweet onion, shallots and spring onions (or spring onions). They all taste different and fit in different dishes. The same rules apply to storage, except for spring onions. We will explain them separately.

Store unpeeled onions
Unpeeled onions, so still in their skin, keep best for the longest time in a cool, dark and dry place. The best is a temperature between 12 and 15 degrees. Then they can be stored for up to 2 months. Do not put them in a plastic or cloth bag, they need ventilation. A paper bag with holes or a box with holes works well. Don’t put them next to potatoes, they can rot faster. Onions absorb the moisture from the potatoes. And onions speed up the ripening process of the potato, causing it to spoil faster. So not a good combination.
Store onions in a nylon stocking
According to Dragonfly does it also work to put onions in a Nylon stocking to keep them fresh longer. Take a (clean) used stocking and put the 1st onion at the bottom. Make a (loose) knot above it, but leave some space in between. Put the 2nd onion in the stocking and tie a knot above it. Continue like this until the stocking is full. Then hang it in the desired place.

Are offshoots still edible?
It may happen that over time the onions get green shoots. Are they still edible? Yes, we have researched before. It is best to remove the offshoots and not eat them. They taste quite bitter. And that is not desirable in every dish. But when onions are stored in the right way and temperature, sprouts are less likely to appear.
Save half an onion
Do you only use half an onion in a recipe and the other half is left over? Then wrap it up and keep it in the refrigerator. This can be done by wrapping some cling film around the cut surface or by placing half in a container with a lid. In this case, use a glass container, because the onion smell can permeate the plastic. This half can then be eaten up to 10 days later. But check and smell beforehand whether the onion is still good. If it’s discolored, dried out, or rotten, throw it away.

Store in the freezer
It is also possible to freeze onions. Don’t just put the whole ball in the freezer compartment, then it won’t go well. Peel and slice the onion first and blanch briefly. Place in a resealable bag and freeze. Then it can be kept for up to 1 year.
Store spring onions (or spring onions).
A spring onion or spring onion looks very different. This one looks more like a thin leek. Therefore, store them in the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator. Then it will stay good for about 1 week. Leftovers can be stored in cling film or a container. If it has gone limp, has mold or smells sour, throw it away.
