The Best Way to See the 2023 Geminid Meteor Shower in Indonesia

Liputan6.com, Yogyakarta – The Geminid meteor shower will decorate the Indonesian sky tonight, Thursday (14/12/2023). The Geminids are the only colorful meteor shower that Earth’s inhabitants can witness this year.

This meteor shower will shoot out with an intensity of 120 ‘shooting stars’ per hour during the peak of the meteor shower. During the peak of the Geminid meteor shower, the Moon will not be visible in the night sky.

The Geminids are the most prolific “shooting stars” in 2023 in the Northern Hemisphere. This meteor shower is active from November 19 to December 24 every year.

This annual phenomenon is less well known than the Perseid meteor shower which occurs in August. This probably happened because the weather was much colder.

Although less well known, the Geminid meteor shower is one of the best shooting star displays of the year. According to the American Meteor Society, the absolute peak of the Geminids is expected to occur at 20:00 EST on December 13 or 08.00 WIB the following day.

In Indonesia, according to the Jakarta Planetarium in its official account on Instagram, the peak of the Geminid meteor shower in Indonesia will only occur from 14 to 15 December 2023. The Geminid meteor shower is very bright and fast and tends to be yellow in color.

However, these meteors can also be white or green. This makes the Geminid meteor the only display of multi-colored shooting stars in 2023.

Apart from that, the Geminid meteor shower is also the only large meteor shower that is not caused by comets, but by asteroids.

Here’s how to see the Geminid meteor shower

1. Find a location with a field of view to the Northern sky

2. Stay away from bright lights, go to the darkest place to see the meteor shower clearly

3. Look at the meteors with the naked eye because meteor showers are better witnessed with direct vision

4. You don’t need special equipment, such as a telescope or binoculars because meteor showers can be witnessed directly

5. Give about 30-45 minutes for our eyes to adapt to the darkness

6. Avoid using a cell phone when you want to see a meteor shower so that your eyes can adjust to vision in the dark

7. Choose a location where the sky is not disturbed by trees or buildings
