The Best Time to See Pretty Cosmos Flowers in Autumn at Hidaka Village in Kochi

The best time to see the pretty cosmos swaying in the autumn breeze in Hidaka Village. A scenic spot where you can take collaborative photos[Kochi]

Karen flowers gently sway in the autumn breeze. Cosmos flowers are in full bloom in the approximately 5,000 square meter field to the south of Hidaka Village Station, a tourist hub in Hidaka Village, Kochi Prefecture. Since 2013, the Hidaka Village Water and Environment Protection Association, an organization made up of local farmers, has been taking care of the area by sowing cosmos seeds every year. This year (2023), I sowed the seeds in mid-August, and the flowers started blooming about two weeks ago, and are now blooming for five minutes.

In fact, this is a spectacular spot where you can take collaboration photos with “Aru Mono”. Since it is located along the JR Dosan Line, you can take photos of the train and the cosmos together. People who visited today (11th) were enjoying the autumn scenery while taking photos. Cosmos can be enjoyed throughout October.

Village Station Hidaka is located on the north side of the cosmos field. It opened in November 2014 and is celebrating its 10th year this year (2023). The store carries approximately 800 types of products, including locally grown vegetables and processed products. We asked stationmaster Asahi-san to tell us about the “top 3 most popular items” from among the products that are currently in season.

“The third place is chestnuts. They are in season right now. There are a lot of large chestnuts, so 2023 will be a big harvest and there will be quite a lot of them.”
Many farmers grow them in Hidaka Village, and they sometimes sell out by mid-morning.

“Second place is Shine Muscat. Two farmers in Hidaka produce it. It’s in season and has a delicious taste.”
Shine Muscat started appearing in late September. Prices vary widely, but by noon today (the 11th), one bunch was lining up for anywhere from 400 yen to 1,200 yen.

And 1st place! Extra edition before. Asahi Station Master’s recommended autumn flavors are…

“Boiled jumbo peanuts from Hidaka have just started to appear. Peanuts are in season right now.”
“Boiled peanuts” are freshly dug peanuts boiled with their shells in salt. It seems to be very popular among women and has many repeat customers.

“The texture is similar to edamame. It has a slightly sweet soybean taste and a salty taste that makes it addictive.”

So what’s number 1?

“No. 1 is Niitakanashi. It’s in season right now, and two of these large grains cost 750 yen. The price is quite affordable.” Niitakanashi sells more than 1 million yen in a month. It looks like it will be fun all through October.

Autumn flowers and autumn flavors. Why not stop by and get a feel for the seasons?

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Village Station Hidaka, a ceremony and mochi-throwing event will be held on December 2nd and 3rd, as well as gourmet food stalls and other stalls.
