Nothing eclipses memes: this April 8, many young people are experiencing their first solar eclipse, while those whose knees snap are already on their second or third, but humor is something that unites generations.
After the ‘jewels’ of memes that the first presidential debate left us, users quickly jumped (like the shepherds to Bethlehem) to change the subject and now become experts on eclipses.
This Monday, the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun and produces the solar eclipse, a phenomenon that is a spectacle in much of the American continent. It is expected to last 310 minutes (just over 5 hours), from Mazatlán ( Mexico) to the east coast of Canada through the United States.
Six eclipses of this type have been seen in Mexico: 1970, 1984, 1991, 2000, 2014 and 2017. During this phenomenon, the skies darken, the temperature drops several degrees, the birds become silent… and the memes (and tourists) even come out of the sewer.
NASA broadcast the phenomenon live from its website and announced the launch of three probe rockets to study how the Earth’s upper atmosphere, which has an electrical charge, is affected.
Several WB-57F aircraft from the space agency follow the phenomenon from the South Pacific Ocean, to Mazatlán, in Mexico, through the United States – from Texas to Maine – to Canada, tracing a diagonal trajectory and taking photographs of the Sun to study its corona during the phenomenon.
How to see the solar eclipse today?
There are several instructions that you must follow to witness a solar eclipse:
- You should never observe the Sun directly, either with the naked eye or with sunglasses (even if partial): the Sun is never completely covered by the Moon and looking at it without safe and adequate protection can damage your eyes.
- Do not look at the Sun with devices (cameras, videos) or instruments (telescopes, binoculars) that are not prepared for this or do not have approved solar filters.
- The Sun can be observed by seeing its image projected on some type of screen or with eclipse glasses, which are designed for this.
If you don’t have any of that, better look at these memes.
