1. Shrek

A meme-worthy masterpiece still celebrated 20 years after its release, Shrek is one of the most iconic children’s films of all time. It perfectly balances fairy tale characters and crude gags with a sweet story about loving each other and never judging a book by its cover. Everyone’s favorite grumpy green ogre, Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers), reluctantly seeks to rescue Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz). Along the way, he meets his trusty sidekick Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), battles a dragon, and monologues about onions. — Belen Edwards, entertainment reporter

A couple in bed, looking scared.

The indie film that ushered in a new era of horror, Paranormal Activity breathed new life into the found footage subgenre. With $15,000, 7 days to shoot, a unique suburban home, and a cast of actors to play, writer/director Oren Peli crafted a demonic story that had audiences screaming in terror. Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat star as a young couple who should be in the newlywed phase of moving in together. But in the dark of the night, something keeps seeping into their room. Compared to the sequels that would follow, this first outing might seem tame, even with the flashy alternate ending it got when acquired in the studio. Yet paranormal activity is always deeply frightening. Peli created an expectation with the long bedroom shot, teaching us to watch out for threats, even when the heroes couldn’t sleep. And every time this threat comes, it brings goosebumps. —Kristy Puchko, Associate Entertainment EditorHow to watch : Paranormal activity(opens in a new tab)

3. Office space

Office space – 1999 Stephen Root

Mike Judge has always had a knack for finding the pulse of things. It’s Idiocracy that (understandably) tends to get the most credit in our post-Trump world, but 1999’s workplace comedy Office Space is just as perfect. Starring Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston, the intensely quoted festival of laughter goes wall-to-wall with iconic examples of comedy. Everything from Lumberg to the Michael Bolton trials; from the red stapler to the despicable death of an uncooperative printer. Office Space beautifully and hilariously captures the mundane tortures, mindless logic and cathartic escapes of unsatisfying office work. As true and accurate today as it was then. – Adam Rosenberg, Senior Entertainment Reporter How to watch:office space(opens in a new tab)

4. Guava Island A man in a Hawaiian shirt playing the guitarRihanna and Donald Glover lead this dark and joyful musical journey. A vibrant mix of contemporary tunes and timeless storytelling (with just a dash of Atlanta-esque FX flair), Hiro Murai’s Guava Island tells a story of oppression and resistance that’s always worth revisiting. If you haven’t seen it yet, take the time. At only 55 minutes, it’s a steal. — Alison Foreman, entertainment reporter How to watch:

The VelociPastor, a low-budget B-movie about a pastor who can transform into a dinosaur, is indeed one of the best short films on Prime Video. Completely aware of its ludicrous premise, The VelociPastor basks in the glory of bad special effects and campy dialogue, veering from “so bad it’s good” territory to “this might be the craziest movie I’ve ever had.” never seen “. Follow the titular VelociPastor, Doug Jones (Greg Cohan), as he embraces his newfound power – and also battles a group of cocaine-dealing ninjas. It’s the perfect way to spend 75 minutes. – BEHow to watch:

6. The Iron Giant The Iron Giant and HogarthThe Iron Giant is holding up. Incredibles director Brad Bird’s 1999 feature debut is about a robot that scrapes the sky beyond the stars. If you squint real hard, this story – of a stranded alien and the preteen who helps him – has a lot in common with ET But Steven Spielberg’s puppet never fought back like the iron giant. Vin Diesel lends his gritty voice to the film’s eponymous star, teaming up with 9-year-old Hogarth (Eli Marienthal) and local junkyard owner Dean McCoppin (Harry Conick, Jr.) as government forces close in. With a dazzling mix of traditional and computer-generated animation and a killer cast that also includes Jennifer Aniston and Cloris Leachman, The Iron Giant is one you don’t want to miss. —RAHow to watch:

Saint MaudA woman floating above her bed in the grip of a demonic possession If religious horror is what your dark heart desires, then your prayers are answered with Saint Maud. Critics hailed writer/director Rose Glass’ debut feature as a horror masterpiece, and it’s easy to see why. Morfydd Clark gives a riveting and edgy performance as Maud, a hospice nurse tasked with caring for the body. But his biggest goal is to save the soul of his decadent new patient. Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) doesn’t believe in God, but does believe in good times. Her sensuality concerns and enchants Maud, drawing the two into a bond that will become bitter and brutal. Weaving genuine religious rituals into the seductive twist of psychological horror, Glass creates a descent into hell that is a twisted pleasure to watch. — K.P.

Passing the batonSpike Lee directs this filmed performance of Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s clever tale of Waiting for Godot, this time featuring two young black men, who riff on culture, escapism and the invisible shackles that trap disgruntled people. Both provocative and profane, the film Pass Over features the original Broadway cast (all of whom followed the show on Broadway) in electrifying performances that harness the humor and heartbreak of Chinonye Nwandu’s excellent script. — Alexis Nedd, Senior Entertainment Reporter
