Designblok opens its doors. The main star is the British-Israeli designer Ron Arad, the main theme is youth and one of the main locations is the new building of the Prague Museum.
The traditional design and fashion exhibition, in addition to many locations throughout the city, will also take over the Equestrian Hall of Prague Castle, the Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Florenc Bastion from 2 to 6 October. We bring you seven tips worth paying attention to in this year’s Designblok offer.
1. Czech glass factories are not afraid of contemporary language
Every year, the best Czech glass works are presented at Designblok, which is willing to introduce the language of contemporary art into classic craftsmanship. Moser brings the installation Born of Sand, in which he plays with the idea of a young and fearless soul, Rückl went into another form of glass cutting, and the company Lasvit from Nový Bor, known for installations from New York to Tokyo, focusing on drinking and decorative glass as well as lighting. The KLIMCHI glass factory is also dedicated to this. In addition, its artistic director František Jungvirt deals with animal motifs in his own collection of collectible boats.
Sklárna Harrachov will also present herself at Designblok for the first time. In addition to sets that have been tested over the years, there will be new products on the border between the glass and the object.

Their metal models of tractors, ladybugs on a key or clickers are known all over the world. The Czech manufacturer of tin toys Kovap, which many boys and girls carry in their hearts, brings new products in an unusual color design. Writing and drawing on the hood allowed!
3. Rest options
The rest can take many forms. Just like a sofa or armchair that you look forward to sitting down in. In her Up and Down collection, designer Tímea Kepová sees rest in a different way than we might expect. After all, her motto is: “Nothing changes unless nothing changes.”
Tímea Kepová, who together with the designer Georgios Somarakis is the recent winner of the Czech Design Award for a series of wooden solitaires in the form of non-traditional stools and benches, has once again created an interesting installation.

4. Bóda Horák Biosphere
Bohuslav “Bóda” Horák is a master of artistic design. His creations, inspired by nature and accepted in the world by fame, have always won over industrial production with their expressive power of authority. The co-founder of the legendary group Atika is celebrating his 70th birthday with an exhibition of collectibles and new works at the Museum of Applied Arts until the end of October 2024.

5. Christmas decorations that last even into the future
The Rautis brand continues the tradition of more than a century of making Christmas decorations with beads in Poniklá in the Krkonoše Mountains. In the new Random collection, this small family company teamed up with one of the most progressive Czech studios, LLEV.
Behind it are life and creative partners, Eva and Marcel Mochal, who combined historical patterns with contemporary design. This unique glass making technique is also listed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And it turns out that his production is still definitely not dead.

6. How the “designed” Festka bike is made
Their bikes aren’t for everyone, but maybe every rider wants them. Festka, a Czech manufacturer of high carbon bikes, is a symbol of premium bikes, and Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom appreciated the quality.
The bikes of the manufacturer from Vinohrady in Prague will be displayed right in the production process. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the creation of the new limited edition live, when photographer Eva Davidová will cover the bike’s frames with her youth-themed photos.
7. Diploma selection and fashion shows
The designer Valérie Jurčíková, a student of Liběna Rochová, approaches clothing as sculpture. She likes to experiment with unusual materials, and according to her, the perfect outfit is universal, although she herself tends towards a more artistic concept of fashion. In the Sugar Boys collection, Štěpán Mareš escapes into a dreamy gay fashion, while Sejin Park from France emphasizes the different attitude in formal and informal clothing. formal.
Designblok will once again give space to the younger generation and promising European students. You can judge the work of the 15 young designers who reached the finals of the tenth annual Diploma Selection international competition at the exhibitions on Saturday, October 5, at the Lobkowicz Palace.
Tip: install Cosmos
Last year’s hit by Designblok, the metallic installation Cosmos, stops in Prague again. Entry to this intergalactic beauty is free at the Prague Museum. In a metal capsule on six wheels, ten original glass works from the workshops of ten leading Czech designers are presented against the backdrop of an immersive audiovisual display of cosmic infinity.
