Nowhere is hypocrisy so skilful as in the film industry. The comedy pokes fun at artists’ whims with radically evil humor. It’s not enough for the “best film of all time”, but for an enjoyable evening at the cinema.
If you don’t want to miss the “best film of all time”, you have to go to the cinema in the coming days. Because there it is: “The best film of all time” – at least according to the title. What’s behind this Spanish-Argentine comedy starring Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas?

Penélope Cruz as a hip director
What can be said unequivocally: Penélope Cruz wears the weirdest wig of all time in this film. A wild red mane of electroshock to match Lola Cueva’s artistic powerhouse. The hip director is to make a film of superlatives on behalf of a rich financier: the work of a Nobel Prize winner, filmed with two absolute star actors who have never worked together before.
Director Lola Cuevas: “The two come from different worlds. Iván is the maestro of acting, admired by everyone. And Felix is a star, an international film star. This results in a fascinating field of tension with a lot of potential.”

Antonio Banderas caricatures a Spanish Hollywood celebrity
Antonio Banderas appears in an orange-colored sports car, blonde in the passenger seat, catering according to contract macrobiotic, gluten-free and regional. It’s wonderful how Spain’s Hollywood celebrity caricatures a Spanish Hollywood celebrity. Félix Rivero exudes world star glamor and represents everything his colleague despises. Iván Torres, played by Argentinian Oscar Martínez, is the awe-inspiring eminence grise of the Spanish-language theater world. But the two have one thing in common: the oversized ego.
“I can already see us being presented with the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre. – In Hollywood? – Yes, you will give a little speech in English. Can you? – No, no. I hate to be the model Latino in this entertainment industry for the mentally challenged. No go, you like doing that.”

Martínez & Banderas: Cockfight between two vain actors

Before the Oscar, however, the joint film would have to be shot, which requires a certain amount of cooperation. But even the first speech samples show how difficult it is for both of them to hide their contempt for one another. “The best film of all time” entertains with the unleashed cockfight of two vain acting roosters.
Nowhere is there so skillful hypocrisy, so much resentment at play as on the big stage of filmmakers. This comedy makes that obvious, of course in an exaggerated form. The most honest scene is the one where the rivals are allowed to swear at each other in an acting exercise.
Comedy by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat with a few punch lines
Cool, confident director Lola Cuevas has her ways of teaching two whimsical stars a little humility.
She is portrayed as a psycho coach, the actors either as mimosas or as skilled self-promoters. Artist’s quirks are attacked here with radically evil humour, but also the sexist patterns that both actors fall into over and over again towards Lola.
Not everyone may find this full-length self-reflection entertaining, but the film by Argentinian director duo Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat has a few gaudy punchlines to offer – and a grandiosely self-ironic performance by Antonio Banderas. It’s not really enough for the “best film of all time”, but it is definitely enough for an enjoyable evening at the cinema.
