The best lyrical voices of the region will meet in San José, Costa Rica, for the fourth edition of Orfeo, the American Lyrical Singing Competition.

This is an initiative of the agricultural machinery company Saturnia, in conjunction with the School of Musical Arts of the University of Costa Rica (UCR).

50 interpreters from the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba and Costa Rica will participate in this competition, which is focused on classical repertoire, such as opera, oratorio and concert song. All of them will be evaluated in different aspects.

“You shouldn’t miss it, because the contest really touches your heartstrings: listening to a singer live, with a voice that is not amplified by a microphone, that is educated, instructed, trained to sing without a microphone, is a unique experience,” said Tanya Cordero, artistic director of Orfeo.

The contest has a international jury with big names of the world lyrical scene.

“The president of the jury will be none other than the casting manager of La Scala in Milan, Maestro Galoppini; but we are also bringing an artistic director who has been running her own opera singing competition for 22 years; we also have the director of the Toronto Opera and the founder of the LSU University Opera, among others,” explained Luigi Sansonetti, president of Orfeo.

The first, second and third place winners will receive $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500, respectively, as well as the gold, silver or bronze Orpheus statuette.

The Orpheus competition will be held From Monday 26th to Saturday 31st Augustin the main auditorium of the UCR, which has a capacity for 700 people. Admission is free for the general public.
