What is your favorite horror movie? This famous line of Scream resonates with us every time the darkest time of the year approaches. We may not have as much of a celebration culture, whether it’s Halloween or the Day of the Dead, but it’s always a good excuse to talk about a film genre that fascinates us beyond measure.
Of course, when choosing our favorite horror films, all our subjectivity comes into play. Some will prefer slashers, with blood and a killer on the loose. Others will go on the religious side and exorcisms. While some will prefer psychological horror, and others will have dozens of options.
But there are some facts and characteristics that can make a movie perfect. Or at least, that’s how it works for scientific research, and one in particular that has determined which is the most terrifying film of the genre.

Through the Science of Scare Projectwhich monitors the heart rates of 250 participants to establish a Scare Score system, it was established that the scariest horror movie of all time is Sinister2012, directed by Scott Derrickson. Audiences experienced an average 34 percent increase in heart rate while watching the film.
The plot follows Ellison Oswald, a crime story writer who is in a bad patch, he hasn’t had a hit in over 10 years and he is desperate. When he discovers a film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery.
He moves his own family into the victims’ house and gets to work. However, when old images and other clues point to a supernatural presence, Ellison discovers that living in that house could put his own family in danger.
